At least 31 people have been killed after being trampled to death at a church in the southern Nigerian city of Port Harcourt. Seven people were injured in the incident.

Qatar-based Al Jazeera reported that food was served at the church on Saturday morning. At this time the participants proceeded to take food together. Many people went to get food together and broke down the gate of the church. The incident took place at this time.

River State Police spokeswoman Grace Erin Coco confirmed the information. He said participants at the event were waiting for food. Some people started running impatiently. Under their pressure the gate broke. At that time some people fell on the ground and then the incident of trampling took place.

Coco told Reuters news agency police were conducting an investigation at the scene. The situation has been kept under observation.

According to local media outlet Punch, an event called The Kings Assembly was held at the Port Harcourt Polo Club. There was a lot of crowding at a charity event called Shop for Free. Many people have been waiting for the event since Friday night (May 26).
